Proximity Housing Project
For the past 25 years at C&M Precision Tech, we have been a well-respected supplier of machined components to a large industrial automation company. For this project, we leveraged our design-for-manufacturing capabilities and took the initiative to consult with them on reengineering the proximity housing highlighted here.
The original housing consisted of two parts that were joined in an assembly process. Our engineers quickly identified a method for re-working the design to machine the housing as a single piece. In addition to eliminating downstream assembly, a single piece housing could be manufactured more economically and with a better, more consistent level of quality. When presented with this cost- and time-saving opportunity, the client approved our plan.
We manufactured the housing on a multi-axis Swiss-style lathe equipped with concurrent machining functionality and other productivity-enhancing features. This allowed for fast, accurate production with minimal setup. By paying close attention to every aspect of the process, we upheld close, ±.0005” tolerances. When complete, we gave the parts a nickel chromate finish to enhance the appearance and improve corrosion and wear protection. Quality Assurance involved many different test and inspection processes and submission of Level 3 PPAP documents.
Current production of this housing is at the rate of 150,000 units on an annual basis. Product is delivered on a Just-In-Time basis to support the company’s Kanban pull system. With our outstanding technical competencies demonstrated on this and many other projects, we earned a seat on this company’s machining council. This advisory group consists of representatives from only 13 of their 3,000+ suppliers, and we are very honored to have been chosen to represent the machining community.
